Legal Services

scales of justiceThe LGC’s Legal Services and Government Affairs Department provides general legal advice to local officials and represents municipal interests before the legislature and state agencies. The department has seven attorneys; four primarily provide legal services and three primarily provide advocacy services.

Four LGC attorneys are available to answer inquiries and provide general legal assistance to elected and appointed officials from member towns, cities and village districts. Visit the Legal Inquiries page for an overview of scope, attorney/client relationships and how to submit inquiries.

LGC’s Legal Services attorneys also write articles and publications, including Knowing the Territory: A Survey of Municipal Law for New Hampshire Local Officials;The Basic Law of Budgeting: A Guide for Towns, Village Districts and School Districts; Town Meeting and School Meeting Handbook; Guidebook for New Hampshire Elected City Officials; and other publications, as well as a variety of articles for LGC’s New Hampshire Town and City magazine. The attorneys present workshops and educational programs on municipal matters. Training opportunities include the Moderators Workshop, Local Officials Workshops and Budget and Finance Workshops, as well as the Municipal Law Lecture Series, LGC Annual Conference and LGC Academy. Occasionally, LGC attorneys submit amicus curiae (“friend of the court”) briefs to the New Hampshire Supreme Court on behalf of member municipalities. If your town/city is involved in a lawsuit that reaches the Supreme Court and includes a municipal issue of statewide significance, please let us know.
