Safety Training
At LGC, we realize that the safer and more informed a community, schools and its employees are, the more likely there will be fewer injury claims or wasted resources. That is why we’re committed to their health and safety, and offer the following safety training programs at no additional cost to LGC’s Risk Pool Groups. These comprehensive offerings are tailored to benefit both employers and employees.
Accident Reporting and Investigation
Course Length: Approximately 1.5 hours
This training provides tips and techniques to supervisors, department heads and Joint Loss Management (Safety) Committee members for the effective investigation of workplace accidents. Topics include:
- Learning the five steps of initial response
- Techniques for gathering and analyzing data and information
- Developing recommendations in order to prevent future occurrences
Back Injury Prevention
Course length: 2 hours
This training is designed to raise employee awareness about the severity of back injuries and how to avoid them through preventive steps. It includes an overview of exercise techniques to aid in the reduction of back stress and pain.
Bloodborne Pathogens and Communicable Diseases
Course length: Approximately 1 hour
This training is designed to satisfy training requirements under the State of New Hampshire Department of Labor’s Code of Administrative Rules Lab 1403.08. Specifically designed for employees with the potential for occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials, its covered topics include:
- Types and symptoms of bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases
- Potential routes of exposure
- Procedures for donning appropriate personal protective equipment
- Cleaning, disinfecting and proper disposal procedures
- How to deal with potential exposure through vaccine
- Review of the organization’s written exposure control program
Car Control Program
Course length: 8 hours
This hands-on training for city, town, municipal or school vehicle drivers is conducted at various airport locations. The training is designed to provide drivers with the skills and information they need to keep their vehicle in control. Instructors demonstrate and coach students to put all the necessary skills together so they can access 100 percent of their vehicle's capacity for avoidance and safety. Chainsaw Safety
Course length: Approximately 6 hours
This training offers guidelines to prevent chainsaw operators from being injured. Topics include:
- Demonstrations of the safest practices to avoid kickback
- Cutting techniques for limbing, bucking and felling small trees
- Maintenance and transporting suggestions

Confined Space Entry
Course length: 2 hours
The dangers of confined space entry and rescue are legendary with a reported 60 percent of fatalities involving would-be rescuers. This program is designed to satisfy training requirements under the State of New Hampshire Department of Labor’s Code of Administrative Rules Lab 1403.14. Topics include:
- Identifying confined spaces in the workplace
- Developing a written Confined Space Entry Program
- Types of confined spaces
- Identification and hazards of confined spaces
- Highlights the appropriate sequence of procedures needed to safely enter these dangerous areas
- Identification of both permit and non-permit required entry
- Duties of the supervisor, entrant and attendant
- Rescue procedures
Emergency Responder Traffic Control
Course length: Varies
Since fire, EMS and police agencies are at great risk of being struck by vehicles while working in or around roadways, this training covers how to control traffic during an emergency response situation using the following:
- Advanced warnings
- Signage
- Flags
- Vehicle placement
- Personal protection
Ergonomics
Course length: Approximately 1.5 hours
Helps attendees learn how to identify workplace injury risks and develop preventive solutions for reducing employee injuries and accidents.
Flagger Registration Class
Course length: 4 hours
Motorists expect few delays and clear directions when traveling through a work zone. This training can help public works employees make that happen and is available for temporary (summer) and full-time staff. Topics include:
- Proper flagging techniques and safety
- Reviewing requirements of the New Hampshire Department of Labor’s Administrative Rules for Safety and Health Lab 1400
- Flagging instruction through the American Traffic Safety Services Association (provided by a Certified LGC Health and Safety Advisor)
Hazard Communication
Course length: 1 hour
This program is designed to satisfy training requirements under the State of New Hampshire Department of Labor’s Safety and Health Requirements (1403.01) for hazardous and toxic substances. Topics include:
- Defining a hazardous chemical
- Reviewing the list of hazardous chemicals used in job tasks
- Where to find Material Safety Data Sheets and how to read them
- Methods to detect and address a chemical release
- Personal protective equipment
- Labeling and required documentation, including the written Hazard Communication Program and chemical inventory
Interactive Use of Force Simunitions Training
Course length: 8 hours (minimum)
This intense, interactive training is for law enforcement personnel and is designed to provide officers with instruction on how to escalate and de-escalate through the use of force continuum. Joint Loss Management Committee Overview
Course length: 3.5 hours
Establishing a Joint Loss Management Committee (JLMC)a requirement of the New Hampshire Department of Labor (DOL)is the vehicle to formally addressing health and safety issues in your school. Complying with Lab 600 and 1400 should be your first step in developing a sound, risk management program for your district. An LGC Health and Safety Advisor can assist you with establishing a JLMC along with setting agendas and conducting effective meetings while complying with New Hampshire’s DOL rules.
LAB 1400 Compliance Training
Course length: Approximately 1.5 hours
Training on the following subjects is required for your organization’s compliance with the State of New Hampshire Department of Labor’s Administrative Rules for Safety and Health, Chapter Lab 1400 (RSA 277, 281-A). In conjunction with an organization’s Health and Safety Planplus specific written programs for topics noted belowLGC’s Health and Safety advisors will provide the training necessary to meet LAB 1400 requirements.

** Required if Risk Management Assessments determine need for respirators, hearing protection and/or confined space entry. This training can be specific to staff involved with associated job tasks. LGC’s Health and Safety Advisors can give guidance in conducting Risk Management Assessments for those tasks in question.
Lock-Out/Tag-Out Training
Course length: Approximately 1.5 hours
This program is designed to fulfill training requirements under the State of New Hampshire Department of Labor’s Code of Administrative Rules, Lab 1403.32 for employees involved with the repair and maintenance of equipment. Topics to be covered include the hazards of working with electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and pressurized energy sources and procedures for safely locking-out, disconnecting and re-energizing electrical equipment.
Personal Protective Equipment
Course length: 1 hour
This program is designed to fulfill training requirements under the State of New Hampshire Department of Labor’s Code of Administrative Rules, Lab 1403.40. Topics include:
- Overview of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements for eyes, face, head and extremities, protective clothing and respiratory devices (including protective shields and barriers)
- When and what PPE is necessary
- How to don, doff, adjust and wear PPE
- Hazard assessment to determine what PPE is required
Training can be modified into either individual PPE requirements for an organization or a complete overview of an organization’s written PPE Program.
Respiratory Protection
Course length: Approximately 1.5 hours
This program is designed to fulfill training requirements under the State of New Hampshire Department of Labor’s Code of Administrative Rules, Lab 1403.47. Available to employees with job tasks requiring the use of respiratory protection, it covers the following topics:
- Types of respiratory protection
- How to properly don, doff, clean and store respirators
- Procedures for medical surveillance and record keeping in accordance with an organization’s written Respiratory Protection Program
Slips, Trips and Falls
Course length: Approximately 2.5 hours
Provides an overview of the most common workers’ compensation claim in our schools plus practical strategies to reduce occurrences.
Specialty Programs

The LGC’s Health and Safety Department offers a wide variety of specialty programs, located regionally, that feature nationally prominent speakers. These programs deal with all facets of municipal, school and district government and are offered throughout the year.
Summer Safety
Course length: Approximately 1 hour
Summer is a New Englander’s most deserved time of year after surviving a long winter. Along with summer, however, come certain seasonal hazards. In this program, attendees learn how to best enjoy the summer by protecting themselves from sunburns, heat stroke, West Nile virus, Lyme disease and more.
Trenching and Shoring Safety
Course length: Approximately 3 hours
This training session highlights the importance of appropriate trenching and shoring techniques and offers guidelines to determine the need for either. Discussions cover confined space considerations plus the need to identify the worksite’s “competent person” and requirements for doing so.
Winter Safety
Course length: 1 hour
It’s cold out, and the wind is howling. But, unlike woodland creatures, we must continue to work through the winter. Learn how to make the most of the winter season with this program that focuses on appropriate clothing, hydration, vehicle and home safety plus how to keep warm in almost any circumstance.
Work Zone Traffic Control for Law Enforcement
Course length: 3.5 hours
This 2-hour program is based on the Federal Highway Management Agency’s curriculum and the NH Department of Transportation’s policies. The number of work zone accidents is on the rise and improper traffic control has been a contributing factor. The objectives of the program will enable the participant to:
- Understand standards and guidelines related to temporary traffic control in work zones
- Understand the role of uniformed officers in work zones
- Recognize the component parts of a typical work zone
- Recognize proper practices and procedures related to the use of uniformed officers in work zones. Such practices and procedures include the proper placement of police cruisers, if used.
Asbestos Awareness
Course length: 2 hours
This EPA required, two-hour course introduces participants to asbestosits uses and hazards associated with exposureand reviews the EPA's Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) regulations. Information on the location of asbestos in schools and proper response actions is included.
Bullying Awareness
Course length: 2 hours
We know much more about bullying and its effects on students than we did just a few short years ago. Unfortunately, this knowledge has not enabled us, as a society, to prevent—or even reduce—the number of incidents that occur.
This course provides information on where and how bullying most frequently occurs along with warning signs to help identify both students who bully and those who may be victims. Successful intervention strategies are discussed as well as ones that are not recommended. Information about the Pupil Safety and Violence Prevention Act (New Hampshire House Bill 1523) and how it impacts schools is included.
Crossing Guard
Course length: Approximately 1.5 hours
This one to one and one-half hour program covers the following:
- Overview of the position – what is expected of you based on your employer’s job description
- Duties and Responsibilities – safety of children, safe movement and control of traffic
- Safety and professional guidelines – personal protection, weather conditions, approaching drivers
- State and local regulations are they pertain to crossing guards
- Proper crossing techniques – position, location, use of paddle, signalized intersections
- Emergency procedures – accidents, violations, etc.
- Additional considerations – complex crossings, intersections
Depending on experience level, students may demonstrate proper crossing techniques on an actual crosswalk.
Improving IAQ
Course length: Approximately 1.5 hours
Indoor Air Quality is affected by a number of factors which include ventilation, odors, the presence of moisture, temperature, humidity, and occupant behavior. This workshop will cover some of the most common, and preventable causes of poor indoor air quality as well as recommendations for improvement of your work environment.
Playground Safety and Supervision
Course length: 1 hour
This training is for parks and recreation, schools, or other staff who supervise playground activities. Topics include:
- Supervisor responsibilities
- Malpractice and negligence as related to potential liabilities
- Provides information related to proper equipment and facilities, playground equipment safety and maintenance
Pupil Management for School Bus Drivers
Course length: Approximately 1.5 hours
School bus drivers spend a great deal of time learning how to properly and safely operate a school bus. The time spent learning about managing the precious cargo, however, is limited. This workshop is designed to provide school bus drivers with essential tools for effective pupil management and strategies for dealing with students in an effective and respectful manner.
Workplace Safety for Food Service
Course length: 3.5 hours
This workshop takes the foodservice worker through a typical day on the job. It provides a review of each task and recommendations for safe work practices, including lifting and back safety, slips, trips and falls, ergonomics, personal hygiene, and controlling time, temperature and cross contamination as food flows through your food service operation.
Lifeguard Responsibilities
Course length: Approximately 1.5 hours
This program is designed to reinforce the importance of vigilance and supervision on the part of lifeguards. It includes two videos, lecture and group discussion on the following topics:
- Lifeguards’ responsibility to patrons
- Lifeguards’ professional responsibility
- Lifeguards’ legal responsibility to act in proper and prescribed manner
- Standard of care
- Functions of a lifeguard
Playground Safety and Supervision
Course length: 1 hour
This training is for parks and recreation, schools, or other staff who supervise playground activities. Topics include:
- Supervisor responsibilities
- Malpractice and negligence as related to potential liabilities
- Provides information related to proper equipment and facilities, playground equipment safety and maintenance
Recreation Liability
Course length: Approximately 1.5 hours
This training provides participants with information on how to operate a safe and effective recreation program. Topics include:
- Information on current policies and procedures designed to reduce the risks and liability issues that may put a recreation program in jeopardy
- Workers’ Compensation issues
- Special events policies
- Use of volunteers
- Lifeguard training
- Maintenance of playground equipment
- Development and maintenance of skateboard parks
- Accommodations for individuals with disabilities
Responsibilities to Summer Camp Participants
Course length: Approximately 1.5 hours
This training addresses health, safety and liability issues related to the supervision of summer camp programs. Topics covered include the following:
- Providing appropriate supervision
- Liability and negligence
- Supervision around water
- Other summer-related health and safety issues that may affect staff members and participants in summer camp programs
