health with apple imageAt New Hampshire Local Government Center, we understand the power of health prevention and how health risks significantly contribute to chronic illness and disease. That is why we offer the following trainings which are designed to be approximately one hour in length.

Back Injury Prevention*

Eighty percent of Americans will, at some point in their lives, experience back pain. This program provides useful information on the back’s anatomy, common back disorders and conditions that may relate to job performance, plus how to avoid back injuries through preventive measures such as proper lifting techniques.

Bloodborne Pathogens and Communicable Diseases*

This program reviews the two major bloodborne pathogens, Hepatitis B (HBV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). An overview of Universal Precautions is presented, and preventive measures to protect against bloodborne pathogen exposures are covered.

Caring for the Elderly

In 2000, 54 million people were involved in some level of care giving and spent, on average, more than 20 hours per week in this capacity. Almost 60 percent of the adult population either are or expect to be family caregivers. The average American can expect to spend more years caring for their parents than they did their children. This workshop includes: The FACTS about caring for a loved one. New Hampshire services and programs, websites, phone numbers and tips you can use and how to balance home and work life situations.

Flood Water Exposure and Disease Prevention

New Hampshire has recently seen an increase in flooding. As a result, municipal and state employees are called to duty to protect the health of their town and city residents. Municipal and state employees must also watch out for their own health in order to function optimally and ensure the public's safety. This program focuses on the hazards associated with working in and around flooding as well as ways in which your workforce can stay safe and healthy while doing so.

Fundamentals of Ergonomics

Ergonomics is the study of human work. Modern office workers face new injury risks such as low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, neck, shoulder and eye strain, just to name a few. This program will help participants understand basic ergonomics concepts, identify common musculoskeletal injury risks and learn strategies to decrease those risks.

Industrial Ergonomics

Industrial ergonomics focuses on workers with jobs requiring manual labor, machinery, use of power and hand tools. Injury risk factors include repetition, force, lifting and carrying of heavy objects and working in awkward postures. Vibration, cold and heat are environmental conditions which can also increase the risk of injuries. This program focuses on reducing injury risks for public works, firefighters, facility maintenance and other municipal industrial workers.

Injury Prevention for the Weekend Warrior

This program reviews how to prevent and treat common overuse injuries—from straining muscles in a pick-up game of football to overdoing it with home improvement activities.

Office Ergonomics

Modern office workers face new injury risks such as low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, eye strain, neck and shoulder problems, just to name a few. This program helps participants understand basic ergonomics concepts, identify common computer workstation injury risks and learn strategies to decrease those risks.

Summer Safety

Summer is a New Englander’s most deserved time of year after surviving a long winter. Along with summer, however, come certain seasonal hazards. In this program, attendees learn how to best enjoy the summer by protecting themselves from sunburns, heat stroke, West Nile virus, Lyme disease and more.

Winter Safety

It’s cold out, and the wind is howling. But, unlike woodland creatures, we must continue to work through the winter. Learn how to make the most of the winter season with this program that focuses on appropriate clothing, hydration, vehicle and home safety plus how to keep warm in almost any circumstance.

Zoonotics: Protect Your Health from Animal-borne Pathogens

This program provides valuable information on zoonotics or animal-borne pathogens. Topics include what zoonotics are and how they can affect employees on the job. Tips on how employees can properly protect themselves from animal-borne pathogens and safely remove dead animals while on the job are also featured.

Know Your Numbers

Do you know the numbers that could save your life? Knowing numbers like your blood pressure and cholesterol is a good way for you to take an active roll in your health. Knowing your numbers also helps you to identify your individual risk for developing chronic conditions and also allows you the opportunity to learn how to reduce your risk and live a long and healthy life.

The Know Your Numbers training was created to raise awareness and help you understand what the following numbers mean related to your overall health:

  • Blood pressure
  • Total Cholesterol
  • HDL, LDL & Triglycerides
  • Blood Glucose
  • BMI
  • Waist Measurement

Men’s Health: Tune Up for Life

Since most men do better job of taking care of their cars than their bodies, this interactive program teaches them how to treat their body more like their car by keeping it in tip-top shape. Attendees also learn about chief health threats for men and preventive strategies to stay healthy.

Self-Care

Because 25 percent of all doctor visits are deemed unnecessary, this program focuses on skills that teach employees how to be empowered in making informed healthcare decisions and to partner with their providers in a shared decision-making process. Participants will receive a HealthyLife® Self-Care Guide as well as a HealthTracker™ passport and engage in hands-on exercises.

Understanding Your Health

This program highlights LGC HealthTrust's Slice of Life health management program and the valuable health and safety resources available to LGC HealthTrust’s medically-covered enrollees and their covered family members. Topics include the Get Healthy Personal Health Analysis Questionnaire, Health Awareness Reimbursement Program and LifeResources—Member Assistance Program. Participants also learn about medical consumerism and are provided important self-care tips.

Women’s Health

Men and women have different needs for obtaining optimal health and wellness. This program provides up-to-date information on a variety of women’s health issues. Topics addressed include the history of women's health, leading causes of death in women and risk factors. Resources, tools and tips on reaching goals to improve quality of life and overall health are provided.

A Piece of Peace

Why is stress so common in today's society? How can we control the effects of stress in our lives? This program will help guide you to the doorway of a less stressed life by giving you the knowledge to understand how stress works and the tools to cope with it in a positive way.

Sleep Smarts: Improving Sleep Habits

This program provides an overview of how vital sleep is to our health and well being. Participants will learn about the natural sleep cycle, causes and symptoms of sleep deprivation and how to develop healthy sleep habits.

NOTE: This program can also be customized for staff primarily comprised of shift workers to focus on health and safety dangers they are at risk for and offering tools and tips on how to survive them (e.g., getting optimal sleep, prioritizing family life and eliminating stress).

Fitness 101

This program reviews the benefits of exercise and identifies the components of fitness. It also incorporates simple steps for getting in shape as well as related nutrition and safety tips.

Nutrition 101

Due to our increasingly busy lifestyles and today’s “super-sized” food industry, Americans are consuming more calories than ever. This program covers nutritional basics and provides helpful tools and tips for incorporating proper nutrition into our daily lives. Topics covered include healthy snacking, interpreting food labels and how to select lean cuts of red meat.

Obesity: What Can You Do?

The majority of Americans are categorized as overweight or obese due to an increase in portion sizes, fast-paced lifestyles and physical inactivity. This program takes a closer look at the obesity epidemic and what you an do to reverse these trends. Participants will learn how to fight obesity through physical activity, nutrition and community collaboration.
